This letter is the first of the two in our Bible written to the church in Corinth. Corinth was a major Roman city in Greece, with a variety of cultures and religions. It was also well known for its low standards of morality. Paul set up the church in Corinth and, soon afterwards, problems emerged. Some hot topics were being debated and causing division, so Paul wrote to the Corinthians to answer their questions and remind them that love wins out over everything else.
There are some meaty topics covered in the book - topics that can cause division, such as sex and marriage, church, the Holy Spirit and the resurrection. Paul reminds us tat the Holy Spirit gives us all sorts of gifts, but that love should always be the centre.
